This fun and warm-hearted series took BOOM into the world of food television. The show was custom-built for colourful wine expert Olly Smith, reflecting his expert yet entertaining approach to dining. It also made Olly into a Harry Hill regular with five appearances in one series of TV Burp.
In the show Olly stages a series of one-off dining events in stunning outdoor locations. It’s a celebration of great regional food set in the British countryside. But the link with the growing supper club scene adds a modern twist. Supper Clubs are springing up all over. What makes the Secret Supper Club stand out is the belief that sharing food becomes more memorable when you do it somewhere new and surprising. That and the dogged determination of our crew to prove it!
In the series Olly travels from West Wales to North Yorkshire and serves dinners in a variety of locations – including a boathouse, a brewery and a windmill. In each place he finds two challenge-hungry food producers willing to help prepare and serve a Secret Supper for ten mystery guests. They have two days to get it right. If it works, Olly hopes the surprising setting and inventive menu will inspire a new trend in communal dining.
As well as facing the challenge of serving dinner outdoors, a long way from a kitchen, there is another problem – the weather. Our winter-time production schedule ensured plenty of resourcefulness when it came to keeping guests warm and dry. Olly’s expert team had to turn their hand to whatever felt like the best way to make the event go with a bang. Along the way we made a tandoor oven from flower pots, enlisted a blacksmith to spit roast a pig and served doughnuts from a rowing boat.
All this combined in a format that delivered credible and innovative food content, useful advice about food and wine pairing, and some really stunning settings.
But it’s Olly’s way of surprising his guests with a last minute invite that has grabbed most of the attention. “Oi, Olly! Ask me to come to your supper club,” is still something people shout at him in the street.
The series of ten shows, sponsorsed by Cordoniu, was produced by BOOM in association with 4 Ventures.
