QUIKSILVER EUROPE/QUIKSILVER INTERNATIONAL
LIVE OB/TV/DIGITAL 2011
One of the world’s biggest surf competitions with a digital audience of 3 million the Quiksilver Pro France is part of Surfing’s elite world tour; the Formula 1 of Surfing. The likes of Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning battle it out in Hossegor, South West France, for tour ranking points and a prize purse of $425,000.
Building on a 10 year working relationship with Quiksilver Europe, BOOM were challenged with providing a robust, Live HD OB multi language production for a mobile surf contest, meaning the competition could move anywhere on a 7km stretch of beech during 10 days in October 2011.
A total of 45 crew produced the event. Using NEP facilities and a complex wireless broadcast solution we created a Media Village close to the main contest area. Here we had fixed sub cut positions for commentary in English, French and Portuguese languages whilst an OB truck would move up and down the coast and beam the international live surf images back to the Media Village. The content would be uploaded via super high speed 60 GB line to make available for the millions of viewers in full 1080 HD.
A high number of specialist cameras including high speed, wireless water-cam and coverage cameras made up a total of 9 Cameras for the live production. Another 4 Cameras were used by TV and News ENG units.
An on-site post production facility using 5 cutting and 1 ingest editing stations meant we could produce high volume content to be inserted into the live production, as well as create additional content for digital distribution, News and TV.
A one off TV show was created for global distribution and Channel 4 in the UK.
